02/08/08 - Theft of Stubble Cultivator from Southwater, Horsham
A Vaderstad Carrier CR500 stubble cultivator has been stolen from Southwater, Horsham on 16th July 08. It is believed that someone with knowledge of farm machinery has stolen the cultivator as it would have taken skill to attach it to a tractor in order to transport it from the farm where it was taken.

The machinery is large and bright red; whoever stole the cultivator is an active farmer because there was fresh hay lying on the floor where the machine was hitched up which must have fallen off the thief's tractor.

Any information on this theft, or if you have been offered one for sale, please contact PC 1460 Nick Shrapel of Sussex Police on  0845 6070 999 quoting Incident number 1772 of 16/07/08.

01/04/08 - The Night-hawking Survey
A Partnership of leading Heritage organizations are conducting The Night-hawking Survey, a major investigation into the problem of night-hawking -
the illegal search for and removal of antiquities from the ground using metal detectors without the permission of the landowners - that is, theft.

This practice has been around for about three decades, but attempts to stop it have been hampered by a lack of hard information on the extent of the problem. The Survey covers the UK, Northern Ireland, and the Crown Dependencies of the Isle of Man, Guernsey and Jersey and is being undertaken by Oxford Archaeology.

The centre-piece of the survey is an online questionnaire, open now and ends at the end of April 08; the survey is aimed at landowners, antiquities dealers - anybody who may have information on night-hawking.

The questionnaire will be back up by voluntary personal interviews, and a review of the current legislation and its effectiveness; it's available at http://www.nighthawking.thehumanjourney.net

For further information, enquiries should be directed to - nighthawking@oxfordarch.co.uk

27/03/08 - Bluetongue update
An enlarged surveillance Zone now includes Ryedale following the discovery of a new case of Bluetongue in Lincolnshire, according to the Malton & Pickering Mercury (26/03/08). The Zone means that farmers are unable to move any animals out of the it, unless they are going straight to slaughter.

The only areas of Yorkshire to be excluded from the movement restrictions are Craven and Richmondshire.

Vaccination is the only solution against Bluetongue, so all farmers within susceptible animals are being urged to start making preparations now so that the impact and spread can be limited.

26/03/08 - Possible Farming Cuts on the way
As reported in the Whitby Gazette on 25/03/08, the Country Land and Business Association (the CLA) are voicing concerns that news from DEFRA Secretary of State, Hilary Benn, is looking to slash the departmental budget by almost £1billion over the next three years, which could have a knock-on effect on projects aimed at dealing with climate change.

The CLA is worried that this cash crisis could put climate change and renewable energy projects for organizations such as the Forestry Commission and the Environment Agency on premature hold.

The CLA claim that the "finger of blame is being pointed at the bungled administration of the Single Farm Payment, which has cost the country £290million in EU fines".
